The MYF are grateful for a congregation that supports them and provides the financial resources needed to attend Mennonite Youth conventions. We are looking forward to Kansas City in 2015.
Everyone is welcome to join us for our Easter Morning Service at Mt Tabor at 7am. In the early morning we will pray, read Scripture together and reflect on the new day. Please arrive at Mt. Tabor via SE Yamhill and SE 69th Ave entrance. We are meeting near the tennis courts (east) shortly after you enter the park. Afterwards everyone is invited to come back to PMC for coffee and tea in the Old Chapel (upstairs). The PMC Sunday School children are using their offering money this year to support Heifer International. They are slowly trying to fill up the barnyard (on left) with animals. Next Sunday you might want to pull one of the kids aside and ask if you could add a dollar or two to their efforts. The smile you will get will probably be worth it! Last Saturday evening people from Ministerios Restauracion and Portland Mennonite Church met for a singing juntos (Spanish for 'gathering'). We sang traditional hymns like 'Amazing Grace' and current songs like 'Cuan Grande es Dios.' Later we were asked to learn the hometowns of five other people and prizes were given out for, among other things, the longest name of a hometown - Ciudad de Guatemala (17 letters). Afterward we enjoyed tostadas, a common dish in Mexico and Guatemala. We all had a very good time singing together and learning to know each other better.
~ Rod Stafford Friends of Portland Mennonite Church,
I've learned a new word - 'juntos.' It means 'together' in Spanish. This Saturday night we are going to have a 'singing juntos' - we are going to sing together with Ministerios Restauracion. We will gather at 6:00pm on the lower level of PMC and sing in Spanish and English, accapella and fully amped. Then at about 6:45 or so, we will have a 'social' (I don't know yet what that Spanish word is). A light dinner will be served. Families with small children could leave as early as 7:00; we will definitely be finished by 7:30pm. It should be a lot of fun. I hope you can join us. ~ Rod Stafford WHERE? / OREGON PUBLIC HOUSE 700 NE Dekum Street, Portland WHEN? / March 4, 2014 (noon -10pm) The Oregon Public House is located a few blocks from Woodlawn United Methodist Church on Dekum Street N.E. in an historic building. A congregation meets upstairs in an 1890's era room called the Village Ballroom that they've beautifully restored. Downstairs the congregation transformed the rooms into a philanthro public house through their own labor. It was the first in the nation. All net profits from the people eating there go to selected nonprofits. Many in their congregation do the waiting on tables, clean up, etc. They have invited the Backpack program to have a benefit night at the Public House on Tuesday, March 4th. You can stop by anytime from noon to 10:00 pm and the backpack program will benefit! The public house is a family friendly place. They even have a small play area for kids. The pub serves a considerable variety in good food and drinks.
Dear PMC: We need runners, walkers, pasta feed volunteers and organizers for this year's Portland Marathon. If you even have a slight tickle of interest in helping out, please let me know! Some runners are asking when they can register. Some are still on the fence. Wherever you are, I sincerely hope to have you on this year's team--make it an annual mission! We have yet to receive the codes from the Portland Marathon, as soon as we do we can start signing runners up, okay? Jeff Galloway in his book "Marathon, You Can Do It" writes that the most enjoyable marathon he ever ran was a 5 hr 10 minute one with his dad. This coming from an elite marathoner. Could it be? A month ago, I signed up for a 10k because I knew the shirt would be cool. But a high hamstring injury that is still healing has me barely running. I still decided to participate in the 5k and felt like I was barely moving. Guess what-- I had a blast! All this to say, you don't have to be in tip top shape to participate with the NOE team. It's okay to sacrifice a good time to have a great time :-) Run free, Brian Overcast [email protected] "I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free!" Ps. 119:32
